Kenya: Take Teaching As a Calling, Not Conduit for Personal Gain - Ex-Teacher

Being a teacher should be a calling and not a platform for personal gains, a former long serving teacher has said.

Mr Amos Gamba, who served for 13 years as Uhuru High School, Nakuru for 13 years, said on Monday during World Teachers Day that if given chance, he will go back to class.
The Teachers Day coincided with the re-opening of Kenyan schools after weeks of industrial action meant to compel the government effect their pay rise.

Mr Gamba said throughout the years, he has enjoyed seeing most of his students grow into responsible people in the society.
He however said that unlike before, a lot has changed and people are now celebrated depending on the amount of money one earns and not what they do for the society.
"In our days, teaching was a respectable profession and teachers were held in high regard but the situation has changed. One is respected depending on what you can place on the table," he said.
Mr Gamba said given another chance he would still choose teaching as his profession.
